Building a Disaster-Resistant University (FEMA 443)


FEMAThis FEMA document provides planning guidance to higher education insitutions as they prepare to identify their risks, assess their vulnerability to natural and man-made hazards, and develop a hazard mitigation plan. Its purposes are to encourage these institutions to take hazard mitigation seriously and to illustrate a course of action for implementing a mitigation program to permantly reduce vulnerability to futrue disasters.

The document is both a how-to guide and a distilation of the experiences of six universities and colleges across the country that have been working over the past several years to become more disaster resistant.

The guide provides basic information designed for institutions just getting started as well as concrete ideas, suggestions, and practical experiences for institutions that have already begun to take steps to becoming more disaster-resistant.
