Seismic Retrofit of a Wood Frame Building

California Office of Emergency Services logoThis case study, produced by the California Office of Emergency Services, describes the seismic retrofit of a single-family dwelling built in the 1850s and located in San Francisco. Structural upgrading, including seismic bracing, was required by the lending institution as a condition of approval for remodeling financing. The house is typical of the retrofit problems encounted in wood frame buildings constructed before the 1930s.
